The Brand Audit
Report 2018-2022

The mission with our brand annual audit is to identify the world’s top polluting corporations. By gathering data on plastic waste collected at community cleanups around the world, brand audits allow us to challenge the plastic industry and demand real solutions. Our reports have revealed that the true driving forces of the plastic pollution crisis are the corporations producing all this plastic in the first place.

This year, we analyze five years of global brand audit data findings. We also examine what the top plastic polluters have done - and failed to do - to address plastic pollution. Finally, we outline what we anticipate the next five years will bring.

What’s with the Global Plastics Treaty?

In 2022, our five years worth of data and mission to hold corporations accountable has particular significance as the world comes together to begin negotiations for a Global Plastic Treaty. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to create legally binding policies that will address the plastic pollution crisis at its source by reducing the amount of plastic that corporations produce. Corporate voluntary commitments are failing and the time for strong mandatory regulations is now.

Presenting the world’s worst plastic polluters of five years!

REPORT HIGHLIGHTS

Plastic pollution is a crisis caused by plastic production, and must be addressed by reducing production.
Every year, the exact same Fast Moving Consumer Goods companies dominate the list, with The Coca-Cola Company the clear top polluter by a significant margin over all five years.
After years of greenwashing and false solutions, corporations have demonstrated they cannot be relied on to bring about systemic change through voluntary commitments.
We need a global plastics treaty that can deliver policies that significantly reduce plastic production and hold corporations accountable for perpetuating this global crisis.
Proven solutions centered on reuse and refill already exist and have demonstrated success in both Global North and Global South countries.
